What is Title I ?
Title I, Part A, Section 1116 of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides financial assistance to state and local educational agencies to meet the needs of at-risk children. The purpose of Title I is to assist schools in improving student achievement, staff development, and parental involvement by providing all children with the opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps (Sec. 1001). The goal of Title I is to provide instructional services and activities which support students in meeting the state's challenging performance standards.
How does Title I benefit our students?
Battlefield Elementary School participates in a Title I schoolwide program. This means that Title I provides for all students at our school through supplemental resources such as:
- additional highly qualified staff,
- supporting parent & family engagement programs and community involvement efforts,
- improving staff development,
- the purchase of additional instructional materials, technology, and supplies.
Title I also provides opportunities for parents to be informed and involved in the educational decisions that impact their student. Parent input regarding our Title I program is encouraged.
How are Title I funds determined and spent?
Title I funding is provided based upon the percentage of students participating in the free and reduced-price lunch program. Title I funds can be used for additional personnel, technology, and various teaching resources. We welcome parent input regarding decisions on how Title I funds are spent. Our Title I budget can be reviewed here.
Title I funds are also used to provide a Family Resource Center, complete with resources that offer advice to parents to help children improve academically, as well as general parenting tips. Our Family Center is located in the Media Center (room 501 B) and is open whenever students are here. Our Parent Involvement Coordinator is here periodically Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 2:30pm. Be sure to stop in whenever you can. Volunteer opportunities are also available in the Family Resource Center.
If you have questions or input about our school's Title I program, please contact the school principal, Dr. Kent McCrary, [email protected] or the Parent Involvement Coordinator, Andra Herpst, [email protected]. Input forms are available online or in the Family Center.
